The Great Consolidation

This feels like a populist moment. Americans are Tea Partying. Greeks are rioting. Incumbents are being thrown out; the Federal Reserve is facing an audit; Goldman Sachs is facing prosecution. In Kentucky, Ron Paul’s son might be about to win a Republican Senate primary.

This is the perverse logic of meritocracy. Once a system grows sufficiently complex, it doesn’t matter how badly our best and brightest foul things up. Every crisis increases their authority, because they seem to be the only ones who understand the system well enough to fix it.

But their fixes tend to make the system even more complex and centralized, and more vulnerable to the next national-security surprise, the next natural disaster, the next economic crisis. Which is why, despite all the populist backlash and all the promises from Washington, this isn’t the end of the “too big to fail” era. It’s the beginning.

If you built a massively multiplayer game called Capitalism (you could even throw in Democracy), based on the way it runs today, would anyone play it?

NOTE: here's a quick response to those that maintain that the system we have today is a perversion of Capitalism and not Capitalism itself. The implication is that the term is being misused in the question above. Some thoughts:

What makes Capitalism so weak, as a system, that it is so easily and horribly misused and/or perverted?

Any theory that relies on a tightly bound set of theoretical assumptions and lofty preconditions in order to perform effectively sounds very similar to an ideology.

It's unlikely that any existing economic system, including Capitalism, is the best of all possible systems (we aren't Panglossian here). So, if the technology is available to compete with it (it is), why don't we? May the best system win.

Connotatively, "war" is seemingly any violent actions undertaken by a state and/or its agencies. Of course, there continues to be a struggle among various interpreters of war powers and its limitations.

Terror: a tool in the hands of those who have little or no politically sustainable recourse in a struggle against parties and forces of superior strength.

Oversimplification? Perhaps, but it is not possible to discuss such matters without clear definitions of such inflammatory words. Even then, civil debate seems a luxury.

Does war fuel terrorism? Specifically, does the presence of foreign forces in Iraq fuel sectarian discontent and violence? Of course it does. Sadly, there are countless similar examples throughout history.

In my opinion, neither humble nor apologetic, power breeds arrogance, possessiveness, and violence.

We had over 1180 signatures on our petition to bring model diversity to the London Catwalks...and while LFW didn't enforce healthy models on the Winter Catwalks, we are still trying to ensure that LFW rectify that in time for the Summer catwalks in September 2007. Keep supporting us, as AnyBody toils away behind the scenes in discussions with the LFW to make that petition a reality! On November 24, Ukraine marked the 75th anniversary of HOLDOMOR or "death by hunger," when millions of Ukrainians starved to death ( estimates range from 2.5 to 10 million victims). The so-called Great Famine of 1932-33, is believed by many to be a genocidal crime, the deliberate imposition of collectivization, requiring the destruction of private property, individual ownership and cultivation of land and relocation to collective farms. Stalin was intent upon paying for the USSR's industrialization with grain exports even though it meant the intentional death of millions of people.

Genocide, the targeting of ethnic Ukrainians? The desire to eradicate the social class of private land owners? Both? Historians argue and debate. In the end, unconscionable mass starvation as a public policy, a political tool.

Day before yesterday, 2001, civilians on U.S. soil were targeted, for what purpose? To frighten and demoralize a population. Brutal and without warning, hallmarks of terrorist acts. But the word "terrorist" is troublesome. One person's terrorist is another's patriot, another's warrior or hero.

The targeting of civilians, noncombatants, in times of conflict has increased dramatically in the last hundred plus years: Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Dresden, London, Tokoyo, Leningrad, Ledice........Beyond the numbers of innocent casualties for each, beyond considerations of geography, and culture, these historic events hold in common the tactical and strategic terrorization of civilians for political and military purposes.

Another common feature has to do with the judgements made about each, whether justified or not. Such judgements define loyalties to one party or another. Nothing more. A terroristic act is one that you--the Other--commit, not me. I am justified, you are not.

Bullshit, huh? Soulsickness.......
